Sling Blade – Slow Burning And Masterful

0

In recent times it seems that Billy Bob Thornton has been reduced to being known for  vapid comedy fare (Mr Woodcock) and for losing out to Brad Pitt in the Mr Angelina Jolie stakes.

Bad Santa saw him star in one of the most subversive of Christmas movies but since then…zilch.

A shame because a lot of his early movies hinted at a serious actor capable of some memorable work.

And yes, this reviewer thinks Monster's Ball is overrated.

Time to dig out Sling Blade then for one of Mr Thornton's finest performances.

Playing a handicapped man released from mental hospital after killing his mother, the heart of the film lies in Thornton's Karl and his relationship with a young boy.

Genuinely moving and ultimtely shattering, this deliberately paced movie is deceptively calming of tone but the payoff is a haunting climax that will linger long in the memory.
